I'm only posting this because so many of you were super attached to this little guy and I know many of you contacted me wishing you could be there with me today. I was lucky I had someone to go with me and Pup had us both today. I will tell you all how the day went so you will feel comforted in knowing how peaceful it was for both him and for me.
When I got to the clinic, Pup was very bright and active. He leapt to the side of his cage when he saw me and looked so healthy even after just having surgery. He sat up on his hind legs to say hello to me and I reached in and gave him some treats. That cute, pudgy face was so bright and adorable, I couldn't believe I was there to let him cross the bridge. I looked at my friend and began to cry wondering if I was making the right choice.
The doc came in. I cried harder. I asked him if I was doing the right thing. Then Pup lost all energy and flopped down. The answer was clearer. I held Pup for a while and then put him back in his cage with more treats. Sophie, who was in another cage began to bang on the bars. I was told by the doc that "she was trouble". That made me smile. I gently lifted Sophie out of her cage and placed her with Pup so that they could see each other one last time. Not that it mattered to Sophie, she didn't know it would be the last time she would ever see Pup but I know it mattered to him. He groomed her for a while in happiness to see her. She couldn't care less and just licked up the extra 'tone that had dripped on the side of the cage.
The doc then took me and Pup into a private room. Pup lay on the table, not really interested in moving much. I gave him the 'tone, as much as he wanted. It couldn't hurt him now, and he just loved it so much. The doc gave him a sedative. As the sedative began to take effect, I bent down to kiss him from each one of you and for me too. I kissed his cheek a few times and he began to kiss me back. This brought me to hysterical tears and he enjoyed licking my face more. He kissed away my tears and even kissed my nose. I gave him more tone and more kisses as the doc gave Pup the final needle.
Pup gently fell into sleep at some point between kissing me and licking tone. He went quietly and very peacefully but most importantly, he went with dignity.
Please give extra attention to Sophie, she seems a little lost back at the shelter now without Pup.
Miss Randy Melanie Belair
